Subordinate (Organizational) Problem Exercise (Morris & McDaniel) is an exercise unique to the consulting firm of Morris & McDaniel, Inc. The more commonly encountered version is similar to a more traditional employee discussion type of role play exercise in that information about problems with the subordinate(s) is reviewed by the candidate during a preparation period, and the material consists of 15-25 pages (performance appraisal summary, e-mails, letters, etc.). However, instead of meeting with subordinate(s) role player(s) to resolve the issues, the candidate makes an oral presentation to cameras, and the recording is assessed at a later time. The candidate is to pretend that he/she is making this presentation to a superior (who is not present), and the presentation is to include an analysis of the problems and what the candidate intends to do to address them. The exercise is “static” in that no additional information is given to the candidate once he/she participates in the preparation phase of the exercise, and there is no human interaction during the presentation phase nor questions posed to the candidate during or following the presentation. The less-common version consists of two or three short (small paragraph each) descriptions of subordinate-related problems of concern to the organization/department and the candidate is expected to deliver an approximately five-minute long presentation on each of the problems’ solutions. This module includes 3 longer practice situations and 8 shorter situations.
