Roll Call/Shift/Staff Briefing Exercise is an exercise that may be similar in some ways to an In-Basket Exercise in that candidates may receive a small packet of material typically encountered by a person in the target rank. However, they may merely receive a page or two of information containing a few topics/problems/issues to be discussed in the briefing. Candidates are to analyze the material and prepare for a roll call/shift change or staff briefing presentation/interaction with subordinates. Candidates will then meet with individuals (role players or assessors) playing the roles of “subordinates” and provide their leadership style, general expectations for their shift/staff's performance, and impart important information to them regarding their area of assignment in a presentation. Following the presentation, the candidate will respond to their "staff's" questions/comments following the presentation/briefing. This module includes 11 practice situations.
