Role Play Exercise (may be called a "Subordinate Meeting," "Citizen Meeting," or a "Community Group Meeting." NOTE: the “Staff Briefing Exercise” and the “Employee Meeting (presentation) Exercise” are covered in separate modules. Each of the exercises covered in this module begins with a preparation phase in which the candidate reviews information about the subordinate, complaint(s), crimes, quality of community life issues, problem(s), etc. The Subordinate Meeting and the Citizen Meeting Exercises are fully interactive role play exercises in which the candidate meets with the subordinate(s) or citizen(s) (trained role players acting as the subordinate/citizen) in a fully-interactive fashion from the outset of the face-to-face portion of the exercise to work out a plan to resolve the problem(s), address complaints, improve performance, etc. The Community Group Meeting is less interactive and may be termed "highly structured" by IOS. Following the preparation phase, the candidate will make a presentation to the “citizen group” (role players and/or assessors playing the roles) for a typically uninterrupted period of time; then, the “group” members will ask questions of the candidate to end the exercise. It is rare, but there may be a written report/memo completed by the candidate following the meeting. This module includes 30 practice exercises.
